James Wood, Bass guitar

James “that bass guy” Wood, moved to Memphis in May of 2003. Having spent two years in Nashville after living in the Washington, DC area in Northern Virginia since his early high school days, James has been exposed to many musical influences that determined what he is (or is not) today. At the tender age of 12, James started playing the drums, with Ringo Starr as one of his main influences. After playing in several bands in Frankfort, Germany, James was relocated to Washington State. There, he played drums in a band called "Flower Power" which played some very old, classic rock and roll. Of course, the classic rock and roll was new at the time, and there were many bands playing new styles of music that hadn't been heard before. When this band dissolved, James started playing bass in a soul band, playing tunes like "My Girl" and "Tighten Up" by Archie Bell and the Drells. That band, as odd as it was, turned out to be a turning point in James' musical career. When that band broke up, James returned to drums in a "psychedelic" band playing songs by Iron Butterfly and Jimi Hendrix.

Following a short stint with this band, James moved again - to Falls Church, VA, where he joined a rock band with his cousin playing the drums. At this point, James was back on bass, and hasn't turned back. After playing with a lot of different bands in the DC area, including rock bands, blues bands, acoustic bands, and even country and western bands, James gave up on trying to make a career out of music, sold all of his stuff except an acoustic guitar, and moved to Colorado. After a short, hungry, non-productive period in Fort Collins, James wisely returned to Northern Virginia, where he found employment and earned enough money to eat.

After many years of not having anything except an acoustic guitar to bang on, James finally got back into playing music - on a part time basis without relying on it for things like rent and food. After practicing up for a while, James was fortunate enough to start playing with Cowboy Bob and The Bountyhunters here in Memphis, playing "Outlaw Country" music. But James' interests have always been in playing the blues, and he started building The Blind Duck Blues Band in November of 2005. After a few fits and starts, the band has evolved into the powerhouse blues band that The Blind Ducks are today.

James plays either a Gibson Les Paul Standard bass or a Gibson Reissue SG bass (based on the old Gibson EB0 body style), usually run through a Hartke HA2500 bass amp into a Hartke 410TP Transporter speaker cabinet. While this is suitable for most small and medium size venues, James occasionally runs his bass through an Ampeg SVT350 amp into one SVT810E and one SVT215E cabinet. This provides the ability for playing in much larger venues (think FedEx Forum), as well as outdoors.
